Storytime

A tiny local model types a short story above the prompt about what Claude is doing

Storytime running in Claude Code

Recorded on Claude Code 2.1.287 in a sandbox. Claude's replies are scripted; everything the mod draws is real.

What it does

A band above the prompt types out a short children's story, a few words at a time. It's written by Andrej Karpathy's TinyStories-260K model, ported to TypeScript and running inside the mod, so it uses no API tokens. What Claude is doing picks the story: the tool it just called decides the hero (Edit is a pencil, Read a book, Bash a robot), the file it touched names the hero, and a word from your prompt becomes something the hero finds. A dim footer says what seeded the story and how fast the model ran.

How to use it

  • Work as usual. A new story starts when the session opens, when you send a prompt and when Claude calls a tool, at most once every 12 seconds.
  • /story writes a new one, and /story <name> writes one about a hero with that name.
  • /story off hides the band and /story on brings it back. The choice is kept across sessions.

Good to know

  • Developer words in your prompt turn into story things: a bug stays a bug, a test becomes a puzzle, a branch a tree.
  • The model is small, so each story is only a few sentences, and they don't always make sense.
  • The model's weights (about 276 KB) ship inside the mod. It reads only the name, file path or command of each tool call, and the text of your prompt, to seed the story.
