Animated scenes above the prompt that grow with every tool call Claude makes

Claude Ambient running in Claude Code

Recorded on Claude Code 2.1.287 in a sandbox. Claude's replies are scripted; everything the mod draws is real.

What it does

A five-row band above the prompt shows a small animated scene, and Claude's work feeds it. In the train scene every tool call couples a wagon, colored by the kind of call (reads, edits, shell commands), and when the turn ends the train pulls into a station named for the turn. There are eleven scenes: an aquarium where each call is a fish, a bonsai that grows a little every turn, a skyline that gains a floor with each edit, stars, weather, the train, Game of Life, a heart monitor, a fireplace, digital rain and a lofi desk. A failed call shows too: a shark, a blackout, a storm or a wagon throwing sparks.

How to use it

  • /ambient opens a picker with a key per scene and the settings. /ambient <scene> picks one by name, for example /ambient train.
  • /ambient next and /ambient prev step through the scenes, and /ambient list names them all.
  • /ambient off and /ambient on remove the band and bring it back.
  • /ambient rows <3-10> sets the band's height, and /ambient when working shows it only while Claude works (always is the default).
  • /ambient shuffle on picks a new scene every turn. /ambient replant plants a new bonsai.
  • /ambient sound on plays each scene's quiet loop and a short sound per call. /ambient volume <0-100> sets how loud.
  • /ambient weather <city> makes the weather scene follow the real sky there. /ambient weather off stops it.
  • The hint line under the prompt gets the scene's name and buttons for the band, the sound and the volume. /ambient hint off takes them away.

Good to know

  • It uses the network only after you run /ambient weather <city> (or auto): it looks the place up once on Open-Meteo, then asks for the weather there every 15 minutes.
  • Of each tool call it reads only the tool's name and whether it failed, not the arguments or output.
  • Sound is off until you turn it on, and plays only on macOS.
  • Scenes are drawn in 24-bit color, and the digital rain scene needs a font with half-width katakana.
  • Your settings, the bonsai and today's skyline are kept in the mod's own store.
