Limit Bars running in Claude Code

Recorded on Claude Code 2.1.287 in a sandbox. Claude's replies are scripted; everything the mod draws is real.

What it does

Four small rings sit in the line under the prompt, drawn with braille dots. The first shows how full the context window is. The other three show your 5-hour session limit, your weekly limit and your model-specific weekly limit. Each ring fills clockwise with the percentage in the middle, a light travels around the filled part, and a ring pulses red once context passes 80% or a limit passes 90%.

Beside the rings you get the model and its effort level, the project folder, the tokens used out of the window and, on a subscription, when the session limit resets.

How to use it

Install it and start a session. There's nothing to configure.

  • The context ring fills in after the first reply, because that's when Claude Code first learns the numbers.
  • If you have a statusLine command in settings.json that shows the model, folder or context, you can drop it: this shows the same.
  • The same repo has plan-progress-fx. With both installed, its progress bars sit to the right of the rings.

Good to know

  • The 5-hour, weekly and model-specific rings only fill on a subscription account. On an API key, as in the recording, they show --.
  • The context ring colors run green, amber, red. The limit rings each have their own colors so you can tell them apart.
  • The animated rings need a terminal. The desktop app gets pie glyphs (○ ◔ ◑ ◕ ●) instead.
  • To animate the rings it repaints them 20 times a second for the whole session.
