Step through the file edits Claude made in the last turn, one diff at a time

Replay Theater running in Claude Code

Recorded on Claude Code 2.1.287 in a sandbox. Claude's replies are scripted; everything the mod draws is real.

What it does

While Claude works, Replay Theater notes every file edit it makes. When the turn ends, a line above the prompt says how many there were, for example "▶ Replay: 3 edits". Open the replay and a pane shows one edit at a time: the file, the tool, how many lines were added and removed, and a short red and green diff. A row of numbered steps shows where you are, so you can review a long run in a minute instead of scrolling back through it.

How to use it

  • Type /replay and press Enter to open the pane. Or press ctrl+x, then Tab to reach the line above the prompt, and press r.
  • In the pane, n goes to the next step, p to the previous one, and c or Escape closes it. You can click the buttons too.
  • The replay stays until the next turn that edits files. A turn with no edits keeps the previous one.

Good to know

  • It only watches. It never blocks, changes or delays an edit.
  • It reads a file from disk just before Claude rewrites it with Write, so it can show what changed.
  • Each step shows up to 12 lines of diff. An edit you deny, or one that fails, still shows up.
  • The replay lives in memory and is gone when Claude Code restarts.
  • Anthropic shares it as a sample, as-is, with no support.
