RetroVis

A retro music visualizer or a row of dancing cats above the prompt, driven by your session

RetroVis running in Claude Code

Recorded on Claude Code 2.1.287 in a sandbox. Claude's replies are scripted; everything the mod draws is real.

What it does

An eight-row band above the prompt animates at about 30 frames a second, like an old media player's visualizer, and your session is the music. Sending a prompt kicks the bars, each tool call kicks a band picked by the tool's name, the beat picks up while Claude works, and a finished turn sweeps across the whole width before things settle into a slow drift. There are two modes. Plasma is a flowing color field with equalizer bars and peak markers. Cats is a row of pixel cats bobbing on a moonlit rooftop: a tool call makes one of them jump or look away, and now and then a mouse runs across the roof. A line under the band shows whether Claude is working, the last tool it called and how many calls so far.

How to use it

  • Click the band, or press ctrl+x then tab, to give it the keyboard. Tab or the arrows move between the two pickers on its status line, and Enter cycles the one you're on.
  • The mode picker switches between plasma and cats.
  • The other picker sets the bar colors in plasma mode (classic, fire, ice, neon, lime, mono) and the cats' outfit in cats mode (plain, party hat, headphones, sunglasses, bow tie, scarf, crown).
  • Your choices are kept across sessions. The band's height is the "Band height" row in /config (2 to 16 rows, 8 by default).

Good to know

  • It only draws in the terminal. It costs no tokens, reads no files and makes no network calls. Of each tool call it uses only the tool's name.
