Flight Recorder running in Claude Code

Recorded on Claude Code 2.1.287 in a sandbox. Claude's replies are scripted; everything the mod draws is real.

What it does

/flight opens a pane with one colored row per kind of work: Model, Shell, Read, Edit, Agents, Web and Other. While Claude works, each row fills in along a time axis as it happens, with its share of the turn and its total time on the right. When the turn ends, a line under the rows names where most of the time went and the slowest single call.

It answers "why was that turn slow?" without guessing: was it the model thinking, a long shell command or a pile of file reads.

How to use it

  • Type /flight to open the pane. Type it again to close it.
  • After three turns, a second line adds up your last 20 turns.
  • A turn that takes over a minute also ends with a short pop-up summary.
Row What counts
Model Claude writing its answer or deciding the next step
Shell Bash and background shell tools
Read Read, Grep, Glob
Edit Edit, Write, notebook edits
Agents sub-agents and workflows
Web web search and fetch, browser tools
Other everything else, like MCP tools and skills

Good to know

  • A tool's time runs from when Claude asks for it to when its result comes back, so it includes any permission step: a prompt you answer, your hooks or auto mode's check.
  • Only the main conversation is drawn on the rows. Calls made inside sub-agents are counted in the header but kept off the rows.
  • It keeps the last 50 turns in its own store on your machine for the 20-turn line. Nothing is sent anywhere.
  • The pane works in the terminal and in the desktop app's Code tab.
